Fun…..Flamboyant…..Fantastic……all that and more is the best way to describe the experience of seeing The Darkness live. Brothers Justin and Dan Hawkins along with the powerhouse rhythm section of Frankie Poullain and Rufus Tiger Taylor were in fine form on a Tuesday night in Austin, TX. Wrapping up the North American leg of their current tour, they put on one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while.
It’s hard to nail down any one thing that makes The Darkness such a great live experience. As it was my first time to see them live I really didn’t know what to expect. Like many, I was familiar with them through videos of past songs but that was about it. Damn, these guys are a blast! One of the worst things that ever happened to rock and roll was when it lost its sense of humor. There’s no danger of that happening here. With Justin leading the way, watching The Darkness play through the songs that night just put a smile on my face from seeing their enthusiasm while performing to Justin’s quirky sense of humor in some great exchanges with the crowd.
The Darkness follow in a long tradition of the great British glam bands of the 70s. And like the best of them, while the look is undeniable, its really the songs and talent of the artists themselves that seal the deal. These guys are players of the highest caliber and write some great songs. In a night filled with fist-pumps and smiles I just kept thinking that this is what rock and roll was always about to me. Putting on a great show and giving the fans a night to remember. Long live Rock and Roll and long live The Darkness. Thank you guys for a great night in Austin!
