The Resurgence
by Cody Powell
It’s been a while since I’ve done any writing, and I’ve had the privilege to cover some pretty big acts in the past and will continue to do so, God willing. However, there is something coming up that I need to let all of you know about and to attend if you can. My hometown of San Marcos, TX has always had a phenomenal metal scene. Unfortunately, that scene hasn’t ever really gotten the credit that it’s due though any kind of press coverage. Well I’m here to tell you all about it!
A multitude of metal acts have graced the stages in the clubs around town for decades. Bands such as Indisgust, Flesh Hoarder, Disfigured, Insanity, Left for Dead, Dirty Tricks, Wikkid Wayz, Waves of Fear, The Organics, Superfoot, Prolicide, Impulse To Devour, Cerebral Desecration Paegan, GoatsMilk and The Monk. The list could go on, but I think you get the picture. Regrettably with the demise of our beloved venue Triple Crown, dubbed “The live music capitol of San Marcos”, so too dwindled the scene. A few other venues tried to pick up the slack, but just couldn’t seem to sustain the needs of the fans, or the bands the way the Triple Crown could. Now that you’ve had a brief history lesson, let’s fast forward to the present and future of Metal in the 78666.
The resurgence has arrived! Many of the above listed bands still play to this day, and there are a ton of other acts to join their ranks, such as Light Unseen, Overthrow, Hatewaker, Hijo de Puta, and Warhead Wrex just to name a few. Thanks to the good graces of Buzzmill there is a new venue for these guys to play and unleash their fury upon the town, which brings us to that something I needed to tell you guys about. Back in June http://www.kzsm.org (our local community radio station), Deranged Productions, and Buzzmill put on a benefit show with great success. Featuring eighteen bands from both the past and future of our town’s metal scene, they were able to raise a substantial sum of money for the San Antonio Battered Women’s Shelter, and for the radio station to stay on the air. Well folks, they’re doing it again! On September 21st-23rd they will be hosting yet another benefit for the station, and this time the San Marcos Women’s Shelter. This one is aptly called Triple Threat 78666 SMTX Metal Fest, as it spans a three day period, and again features eighteen bands. Do yourselves a favor while at the same time doing a favor for others, by catching this show, and supporting a good cause. Come one day or come all three days. The choice is yours because it’s free!
